【Joint Training for the Armed Forces】Nine Academies: Live Grenade Drills Build Recruits’ Courage and Combat Readiness”

Report by Youth Daily News reporters Wang Tzu-chang and Yeh Hsüan-yu, from Kaohsiung

The “114th Year Joint Induction Training for the Armed Forces’ Nine Academies” conducted live grenade-throwing exercises yesterday. Female recruits from the Officer Class Company executed the five key steps of grenade operation—receive, report, remove, pull, and throw—demonstrating the results of their training. They then observed the explosion of their grenades in the target area to strengthen their immediate response and stress tolerance under battlefield conditions.

Now entering its fifth week, the joint induction training saw the female company taking the lead in performing the live grenade exercise. To ensure training safety, recruits had previously completed practice grenade drills, psychological preparedness training, and physical and mental fitness evaluations, laying the groundwork for safe and successful live-fire performance.

At the live-throwing range, the recruits maintained focus and composure, moving in order to the ammunition issue point to receive their MK2 live grenades. Under the supervision of instructors, they carefully assumed the preparatory stance and grip positions. Upon the command of “Throw grenade!”, the recruits swiftly followed the proper sequence—removing the safety clip, pulling the safety pin, raising the arm toward the target area, and launching the grenade with a coordinated backward swing and body rotation.

Moments later, the grenades soared through the air and detonated in the target zone, splashing water high into the air from the rain-soaked low ground. From behind cover, the recruits observed the results of their throws through viewing windows, successfully completing their first live grenade exercise of military life—an important milestone that solidly reinforced their individual combat proficiency and battlefield confidence.
