In the Navy’s 2025 Dunmu Voyage Training Mission, officer cadets from the Republic of China Naval Academy and the National Defense University gained valuable experience through practical training in ocean navigation, enhancing their professional capabilities and laying a solid foundation for their future naval careers.
Wang Ling-Wei, a student from the Department of Applied Foreign Languages at the Naval Academy, stated that although theoretical knowledge of navigation had been taught during school, it was only through actual onboard watchstanding and observation during the voyage that she truly understood the realities of navigation. Facing the challenges of visa procedures also gradually improved her problem-solving and stress management abilities.
Wang further noted that during the tactical maneuver training, she had the opportunity to serve as an assistant officer of the watch, performing communication reporting and decoding tasks. This gave her a deep appreciation for the professionalism across various naval departments and allowed her to accumulate valuable hands-on experience. She aspires to become a role-model officer in the future, taking on leadership responsibilities and dedicating herself to safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests.
Lu Can-Yu, a student from the Department of Law at the Management College of the National Defense University, emphasized that this was the first time law students participated in the Dunmu Voyage Training Mission. This opportunity allowed him to apply his knowledge of international maritime law firsthand by identifying territorial waters and exclusive economic zones in actual sea areas. Through in-depth exposure to the Navy’s training and operational duties, he enhanced his ability to apply rules of engagement and aims to provide legal counsel that better aligns with real-world scenarios in future naval operations.
